What is Futsal?
FUTSAL = FUT + SAL
The term FUTSAL is the international term used for the game. It is derived from the Spanish or portuguese word for "soccer", FUTbol or FUTebol, and the Spanish or Portuguese word for "indoor", SALon or SALâo.
Hence, Futsal is a game of Indoor Soccer (Football) played between 2 Teams with 5 players on each side.

History of Futsal
1930
A Football boom in Uruguay in the early 30’s led to a lack of space to create football pitches and the outdoor pitch conditions during winter left many unable to play the beautiful game. |
1933
Juan Carlos Ceriani (right), a physical education teacher in Montevideo (Uruguay) invents five-a-side version of soccer. Mr Ceriani created some basic rules which were a mix of basketball, handball, football and water-polo rules
1930 to 1950’s
Futsal was also started in Brazil in the Sao Paulo area. However, it had no real uniformity and no clear rules. Gamescan consistof 5, 6 or even 7 players aside. During this period, there were very little and poor developments in the sport of Futsal. |

1952
The YC Association created the first ever Futsal league in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
1954
The first governing body for Futsal was created in Rio de Janeiro – the Metropolitan Federation of Futsal. |

1956
The first official Futsal rules was published by Luis Gonzagua, from the Federation of Futsal Paulista
1960
The first Incorporated Futsal Organization was formed - South American Confederation of Futsal (CSFS – Confederacion Sudamericana de Futbol Sala)
1965
The first South American Cup (CSFS) was held in Asuncion (Paraguay), it was the 1st ever Inc. Futsal Competition to be held and 6 others would be held until 1979. |
1971
The FIFUSA (“Federacion International de Futebol Sala”- International Federation of Indoor football) was formed on the 25th of July 1971. Mr Joao Havelange served as the Honorary President 1971 to 1973 before he became President of FIFA.
1982
The first 1st FIFUSA Futsal World Championship was held in Sao Paulo (Brazil).
1985
The second FIFUSA Futsal World Championship was held in Madrid (Spain) with an attendence pf 14.000 spectators packing the stand on the Final.
1987
FIFA organized three Tournaments in Hungary, Spain and Brazil |
Futsal Today
Today, more than 100 countries participate on FIFA/ FIFA Confederations Futsal Competitions. There has also been the growth of Strong Professional Futsal Leagues in countries like Spain, Brazil and Russia.
Millions too are practicing Futsal. According to the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) research, more than 4.000.000 Italians regularly practice Futsal twice a week.
